The main purpose of the cavity wall is to prevent moisture and heat loss, but its structure also influences how sound travels through the wall.

In cases where external noise is particularly high – for example, near busy roads or railways – additional internal soundproofing may also be beneficial.
Combining Mass and Separation
The best sound insulation is achieved when a wall combines high mass with effective separation. A heavy inner wall made of brick or blockwork helps to block low-frequency sounds, while the cavity and insulation reduce higher-frequency noise. This combination is what makes the cavity wall such an effective design – provided it is built without rigid sound bridges.
Building or Renovating with Sound in Mind
When designing new homes, it is worth considering acoustic performance from the outset. Increasing the cavity width, using sound-absorbing insulation, and ensuring that wall ties are acoustically isolated can all make a noticeable difference.
For existing homes, improvements can be made through cavity wall insulation, sealing gaps around windows and doors, and adding internal acoustic panels if needed. These measures not only enhance comfort but can also increase property value.
