For many Britons, a beach holiday is the ultimate escape: sunshine, sea air and the chance to unwind completely. But as awareness of climate change grows, more travellers are asking how they can enjoy a seaside break without putting unnecessary strain on the environment. The destination you choose plays a key role – both for your experience and for the footprint you leave behind. Here’s how to plan your next beach holiday with care.

Think About Transport – the Biggest Climate Factor

Getting to and from your destination often accounts for the largest share of your holiday’s carbon footprint. Long-haul flights can quickly outweigh many of the sustainable choices you make once you arrive.

Consider whether you can find a destination closer to home.

  • Stay within the UK or nearby Europe: The British Isles offer stunning coastlines – from Cornwall and Pembrokeshire to the Scottish Highlands and the Hebrides. If you fancy going abroad, France, the Netherlands or northern Spain are easily reached by train or ferry.
  • Mix your travel modes: If you do fly, you could offset the impact by staying longer, or by taking the train one way and flying the other.

The shorter the journey, the more time you’ll have to relax rather than travel – and the smaller your environmental impact.

Choose Destinations That Fit the Season

Many popular beach resorts struggle with overtourism in the high season. It puts pressure on local resources, harms nature and often makes the experience less enjoyable for everyone.

A good alternative is to travel outside peak season. The Mediterranean remains warm well into autumn, and the British coast can be glorious in late spring or early September. By travelling in the shoulder season, you support a more balanced tourism industry and enjoy quieter beaches and better prices.

Look for Local Sustainability Efforts

More destinations are working actively to protect their environment – but it can be tricky to tell who’s genuinely committed. Look for eco-certifications such as the Blue Flag for beaches and marinas or Green Key for hotels and holiday parks.

These labels set standards for waste management, water use, energy efficiency and nature protection. You can also check whether the area supports local conservation projects, such as dune restoration or marine clean-ups, and support them by choosing local providers.

Stay and Eat Locally

Where you stay and what you eat can make a big difference.

  • Opt for smaller, locally owned accommodation rather than large international chains. This keeps money in the community.
  • Eat seasonal, local food and try regional dishes. It reduces food miles and gives you a more authentic experience.
  • Avoid single-use plastics – bring your own water bottle, coffee cup and beach bag.

Small, mindful choices add up when many travellers do the same.

Respect the Beach and Its Wildlife

The beach may be your playground, but it’s also a fragile ecosystem. Show respect by:

  • Taking all rubbish with you – even cigarette ends and snack wrappers.
  • Using reef-safe sunscreen that doesn’t harm marine life.
  • Keeping off dunes and vegetation that protect the coast from erosion.
  • Avoiding the collection of shells or coral, which are part of the natural balance.

A simple rule: leave the beach as you found it – or a little cleaner.

Add Meaning to Your Holiday

A beach holiday doesn’t have to be just about sunbathing. Many places offer activities that combine relaxation with purpose:

  • Join a local beach clean-up.
  • Take a guided snorkelling or wildlife tour that teaches you about marine ecosystems.
  • Visit coastal nature reserves or museums to learn about local conservation efforts.

These experiences often become the most memorable part of your trip.

A Holiday That Feels Good – for You and the Planet

Choosing a beach holiday with care isn’t about giving up comfort or fun. It’s about making conscious decisions that benefit both you and the places you visit. When you travel, stay and explore responsibly, you help ensure that these beautiful coastlines remain for future generations to enjoy.

The best holiday is one where you return home refreshed – and proud that you made a positive difference simply by thinking ahead.
