A tightly sealed door made easy – how to keep out cold and damp

Check where the draughts come from
Before you start sealing, find out exactly where the problem lies. A quick test is to hold a lit candle or a strip of tissue near the edges of the door. If the flame flickers or the paper moves, you’ve found a draught. You can also run your hand along the frame on a cold day to feel where the air is coming in – especially around the hinges, lock and bottom edge.
Over time, rubber seals can harden or crack, and wooden doors can shift slightly, leaving small gaps. Identifying these weak spots is the first step to fixing them.
Replace worn seals
The most effective way to stop draughts is to replace the door seals. You can buy self-adhesive rubber, silicone or foam strips from most DIY stores such as B&Q, Wickes or Screwfix. Choose a type that suits your door and frame.

Don’t forget the bottom of the door

Adjust hinges and locks
A door that hangs unevenly can leave tiny gaps where cold air seeps in. Check that the door closes evenly all the way round. If it catches at the top or bottom, adjust the hinges slightly with a screwdriver. Sometimes just a small tweak is enough to make the door fit perfectly again.
Also make sure the latch and strike plate line up properly. If the door doesn’t click shut easily, it may not be sealing as tightly as it should.
Prevent damp and mould
A draughty door doesn’t just let in cold air – it can also allow damp to creep inside. When warm indoor air meets cold surfaces, condensation can form, leading to mould over time. Make sure your door is well insulated and that water doesn’t collect at the threshold.
If you have a timber door, give it a fresh coat of paint or wood oil every few years. This helps protect it from moisture and extends its lifespan.
Consider upgrading to a new door
If your door is old, warped or beyond repair, replacing it might be the best long-term solution. Modern external doors are designed with better insulation and advanced sealing systems that reduce heat loss. You can even choose models with energy-efficient glazing if your door includes glass panels.
